The Best Time to Visit San Felipe (Month by Month)

San Felipe has sunshine pretty much year-round, but that does not mean every month is the same. The seasons here are real, and the difference between a February visit and a July visit is dramatic. Here is what to actually expect, month by month, so you can plan the trip that fits what you are looking for.

January and February: Mild and Quiet

Winter in San Felipe is nothing like winter back home. Daytime highs sit around 70-75°F (21-24°C), nights dip into the low 50s. The water is too cold for most swimmers – around 60°F – but the weather is gorgeous for walking the beach, exploring the desert, or just sitting on your patio at Las Casitas with a book and a coffee.

This is the quiet season. Snowbirds from the U.S. and Canada make up most of the visitors, and the town has a relaxed, unhurried feel. Restaurants are not crowded. The beaches are empty. If you want peace, this is your window.

March and April: Spring Break Season

Things pick up in March. The weather warms into the low 80s, the water starts to come around (mid-60s), and the town fills up with families and college kids on spring break. March is probably the most popular month for first-time visitors.

Semana Santa (Holy Week) in late March or April is the biggest event of the year. The town swells with Mexican families from Mexicali and beyond. It is festive and fun, but if you prefer quiet, book around it rather than during it.

The tides in spring can be dramatic – San Felipe has some of the largest tidal swings in the world. Low tide exposes hundreds of yards of seafloor, which is fascinating to explore on foot.

May and June: The Sweet Spot

If you asked most regulars when the best time to visit is, they would say May or early June. The water warms into the mid-70s – warm enough for swimming, kayaking, and snorkeling. Daytime temps are in the high 80s to low 90s. The spring break crowds have gone home but the brutal summer heat has not arrived yet.

June sunsets are spectacular. The light lingers, the air is warm, and the Sea of Cortez turns colors you did not think water could be. This is the month that converts visitors into property owners.

July and August: The Hot Months

Let’s be straight about this: July and August in San Felipe are hot. We are talking 105-115°F (40-46°C). The water is bathtub-warm, which sounds nice until the air is the same temperature. A lot of part-time residents head north for these months.

That said, some people love it. The town is quiet, prices drop, and if you have air conditioning and a pool – both of which Las Casitas offers – you can enjoy the extreme desert landscape in a way that most people never see. Just bring sunscreen and drink more water than you think you need.

September and October: The Second Sweet Spot

September is when things get interesting again. The worst of the heat breaks, dropping into the mid-90s and then the 80s by October. The water is still warm. And this is when the fishing gets incredible – yellowtail, dorado, and sea bass are all running. If you are a fisherman, October in San Felipe is hard to beat.

These months also see occasional tropical moisture from the south, which can bring dramatic afternoon thunderstorms. They are short, intense, and beautiful – the desert smells incredible after a rain.

November and December: Holiday Season

November is mild and pleasant – 70s and 80s, cooling water, clear skies. It is a great month for a Thanksgiving getaway. By December the snowbirds start returning and the town has a festive holiday atmosphere.

Christmas and New Year’s at Las Casitas is something special. Cool evenings on the patio, holiday lights along the boardwalk, and none of the stress of holiday travel because you just drove here.

The Bottom Line

There is no truly bad time to visit San Felipe. Every season has its appeal:

  • Best weather: May, October, November
  • Best swimming: June through September
  • Most peaceful: January, February, September
  • Best fishing: September through November
  • Cheapest: July, August
